Recently, the Harris County Appraisal District began sending their annual "Notice of Appraisal" to property owners. This letter serves as an annual warning of what your property tax bill will be based on if you do not file a protest. Many Harris county residents are experiencing "sticker shock", and rightfully so. HCAD's Chief Appraiser, Roland Altinger, published a brief video in which he stated that the property values in Harris county have gone up over 20% on average since 2021.

Local government officials would love for you to simply take their word, pay your taxes, and be happy that your property has appreciated so much. This is obviously a bad strategy for taxpayers. Instead, we advise property owners to file a property tax protest every year and this year is certainly no exception. A January press release by the Houston Association of Realtors suggests that HCAD's estimates might be a bit high.

76% of 2021 property tax protests in Harris county ended in favor of the taxpayer, with an average reduction of $58,683. Don't leave money on the table. Contact Texas Tax Reduction for a free consultation to learn how we can help lower your property taxes.
