The Houston Independent School District is facing budget deficits in fiscal year 2022-23, despite a proposed annual budget of $2.26 billion. The $31 million shortfall did not stop HISD Trustees from approving "the largest (pay) increase that HISD has received in history" according to Jackie Anderson, president of the Federation of Teachers - HISD Chapter. HISD Police also made good on the taxpayer's largesse, with HISD Trustees approving $2 million for weapons purchases alone.
Digging deeper, CommunityImpact.com reports that HISD's budget includes $102 million in "one-time ESSER funds, including $52 million to pay salaries". ESSER funds are part of a federal coronavirus relief package set to expire in 2024.
